Selecting a Helmet
- Replace your helmet every 5 years
- Full face helmets offer superior face and chin protection
- Replace your helmet every impact (so don't drop it)
- Make sure it's standards approved
- Needs to be a snug fit without pressure (for a good fit, your skin should move with it)
- Requires good all round vision
- Helmets that reduce noise levels are preferred
- Make sure it's comfortable
- Good ventilation is advisable
- Note that black helmets can get hot & uncomfortable
- Fog resistent visors are advisable (especially on rainy days or to take touring)
Caring for your Helmet
- Keep visor and lining clean
- Wash removable linings
- Don't leave gloves in your helmet as they restrict access to fresh air
- Don't leave your helmet on the bike's mirror as it deforms the foam which is trying to mould to the shape of your head
- Don't leave your helmet on the bike as it may fall off (& will need to be replaced - expensive mistake)
Helmet Disposal
Cut the clasp off the helmet so it can't be reused
