1. Make sure you can fit a sweater underneath (take one to try, even if it's summertime)
2. Buy only purpose built motorcycle jackets
3. Leather has superior abrasion resistance to other materials
4. Make sure it fits well & is comfortable in a seated position
5. Removable linings are good for assisting comfort levels through varying temperatures
6. Vents add further comfort flexibility during warmer weather
7. While material inserts in the sleeves of a leather jacket can add ventilation, they also can let in cold air in cooler weather (even if quoted as 'windproof')
8. Some sports/racing jackets have very bent arms which can become uncomfortable over greater distances (when touring)
9. Make sure there is armour to protect the impact points eg shoulders, elbows, back
10. Prefer CE (European Conformity - independently tested) approved gear eg
    1. EN13595 for leathers
    2. EN1621 for impact protectors
11. Don't want flapping, as it lets in drafts (cool wind) & also can act as snag points when sliding (tear jacket open) 
12. Good chest & neck coverage is important
13. Small leather flaps that protect zippers are advisable (stops zippers tearing open)
14. Triple stitched leathers are better than double stitched (stronger, as stitching can tear open)
15. Thicker leather lasts longer in a slide (before your skin meets the road)
